Fish Publishing Prizes

Winners of the Fish Short Story Prize and Shortlist for One-Page Prize

Jane Camens is the first Australian to win the Fish Short Story Prize. Competition judge Ronan Bennett chose her story 'A Matter of Luck', a story of a poet/civil servant in Macau, over second placed 'The Birthday Book' by Eve Vamas. He said that there was little to chose between them and that Jane got it by a short head.

Eve will be enjoying a weeks retreat at Anam Cara Writer's and Artist's Retreat as second prize winner. Third place went to Stef Pixner for 'The Sort of Luck that Happens to Curtis'  Stef's story  'The Window Kisser' is also among the seven runners-up, who are as follows:-

Stef Pixner The Window Kisser

Gabriel Valjan Back in the Day

Gabriela Blandy Playing With Guns

Ingrid Baier The Best Laid Plans

Wendy Dranfield Blue

Bernadette M Smyth Sightseeing in Louth

Jacob M Appel Ghost Wedding

Congratulations to all of these writers, who were selected from a total of 1,800 entries.

The anthology of winning stories, along with poems and flash fiction from our other competitions, will be launched at the West Cork Literary Festival on Wed 7 July. All are welcome.

The Shortlist for the 2010 Fish One-Page Prize is now on the Fish website, www.fishpublishing.com. There were 1,500 entries to this competition, and as usual the challenge of the very short form has thrown up some intriguing results. This is a deceptively difficult form to master. The rules are different to Short Story writing. It is also a relatively new form that many writers have not yet come to grips with. Fish will post some pointers on the website within the next weeks, along with an online course in Flash Fiction.

The winners of the One-Page Prize will be announced, along with the winners of the Fish Poetry Prize, on the website on 30 April.
